Objectives

Upon conclusion of this conference, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the transmission of drugs into breastmilk and how to breastfeed away from peak levels.
  • Evaluate conditions that promote candida growth and development.
  • Evaluate changes in prolactin secretion and their implication to breastfeeding.
  • Determine the timing of administration of medications and their likely impact on breastfeeding following anesthesia.
  • Provide information on the best use of antidepressants in lactating women.
  • Describe the use of various medications common in mothers of premature infants.
  • Describe the prevalence of antibiotic resistant infections in postpartum women, specifically both hospital and community acquired MRSA.
  • Describe how the length and diameter of the nipple may impact breastfeeding and pumping.
  • Describe situations in which the thin silicone nipple shield may be an appropriate clinical intervention.
  • Describe strategies to eliminate sources of nipple trauma.
  • Discuss the ethical issue of informed consent within the context of infant feeding choice.

Application has been made for CERPs from the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners.
